guided farm tours 2008

Tour 1 – Sunday May 18
Organic & environmental farming
The Lewis family is well known to many in Ludlow. We shall take a tractor ride round their traditional farm where they rear sheep and Aberdeen Angus cattle and grow cereals. They have been fully organic for some years now, very successfully.

After lunch on the farm we move to Nick Tilt’s LEAF farm outside Ashford Carbonel. This 319 acre farm with mixed crops and cattle, shows how careful (non-organic) farming practice can be combined with encouraging wildlife through maintenance of habitats. A cup of tea will be provided.

Organic dairy products & liqueurs
A repeat of this very popular tour. Tony and Barbara Norman’s farm near Pembridge has the world’s oldest herd of Hereford cattle. They have organic vegetables and dairy products, including their own cheeses. Tony will explain how wildlife conservation can accompany productive farming methods. A lunch will give visitors a chance to sample the farm’s products.

After lunch the tour moves on to Monkhide Country Wines where “Digger” and Lorraine Digweed will demonstrate how they produce fruit wines and liqueurs. They will guide you through tasting their range. A cup of tea will be provided.

Highland cattle & icecream
This tour goes to Rhos Fiddle Wildlife Reserve where Trevor Wheeler and his family rear Highland Cattle and Hebridean sheep for conservation management. Trevor will take you on a tour of the farm where he grows organic root vegetables and to visit his sustainable holiday cottage, producing its own electricity and with many energy saving features. Lunch is based on the Wheeler’s own organic Highland beef.

After lunch we go to Church Stoke where the Beddoes family run a flock of laying hens and a large herd of dairy cows which we will see milked. The milk is used to make icecreams (and sorbets) using only natural flavours. They will demonstrate the processes and allow us to sample.

In the afternoon we move to Tickmore at Brimfield, where Ruth and Judith produce a large range of apple juices.
